During a week, you will explore Norwegian nature. But what should you bring with you, and what do you need to know before departure? How to get there? What are the different options, and what is included?
Our team provides you with the equipment for canoeing safely as well as for sleeping in bivouac. The cooking gear is transported by your guide, and each person carries their own sleeping bag. So, what should you bring with you? Here is the list of your personal equipment.
The meals are prepared by your guide. Both a standard and a vegetarian option are available; you just need to specify your preference in advance of the trip. In inns and hotels, the evening meal and breakfast are included. The buffet-style breakfast allows you to make your sandwiches for lunch. Snacks are provided by the guide.
Transportation is provided by our team with a minibus from Lillehammer train station to the starting point of the trek, approximately a 1-hour journey. You can also come with your own vehicle to the starting point; the address will be provided before the departure date. Getting to Lillehammer is very easy, with numerous train connections from Oslo Airport at Gardermoen (1h40) or downtown Oslo (2h).
During the tour, you can enjoy the comfort of mountain refuges,
Norwegian inns, and the freedom of nights in bivouacs in the heart of nature.
The ground mats, tents, and evening meals will already be at the bivouac site upon your arrival. Therefore, you only need to carry your sleeping bag, which is exclusively yours for the duration of the journey, along with your personal items (clothing, toiletries, etc.). You’ll have the option to leave a bag with our team containing items you’ll use only for the canoeing part. You’ll retrieve it at the same time as the canoes.
Our team picks you up at Lillehammer train station. Upon arrival at the destination, you will be welcomed at an inn by the lakeside, where you will begin
the adventure the following morning.
You embark on a 5-day exploration of Espedalen by lake and trail with your guide to complete the loop formed by the itinerary. You can check the detailed program just below.
You will spend the last night at the starting inn. The next day, our team will take you back to Lillehammer train station.
It depends on the days. Two nights in a hotel, one night in a refuge, and three nights in a tent are planned. If you wish, you can also spend a night in a hammock or under the stars. However, you'll need to bring your own hammock as only tents are provided. The locations where we set up camp will be chosen by your guides, often by the water's edge.
No, no experience is required. We will be navigating on a calm and safe lake. Your guides are also certified canoe instructors and will prepare and assist you once on the water. Overall, canoeing is a calm and relaxing activity. However, we do require that you know how to swim.
Although we do our best to limit the amount of equipment to carry, we still have three days of hiking followed by two days of canoeing. Therefore, it is necessary to have a decent level of physical fitness. If you engage in moderate-intensity physical activity regularly, this trip should not pose any issues. You don't need to be a young hiker; the routes and days are adapted so that both young and older, experienced or not, can fully enjoy the adventure.
The initial route is 27 km of walking followed by 12km of canoeing. This averages to 9km per day, which translates to between 4 and 6 hours of walking on varied terrain.
We’ve attached our technical sheet, which includes an equipment list.
We recommend a hiking backpack with a capacity between 45 and 55 liters. To maximize your comfort, the backpack should have a hip belt.
We have carefully planned and organized this tour to minimize the amount of equipment you need to carry. The heaviest and bulkier gear (mattresses, tents, food, etc.) will be available directly at the camps. In your backpack, you'll carry your water, food, sleeping bag, and a few clothes.
No, rest assured, there is no risk in sleeping in the great outdoors. There are no predators in Norway, and the only animals that might bother you are mosquitoes. It's wise to have mosquito repellent. The main risks are related to the weather. However, the guides will always be present to adapt the journey and offer the best solutions and/or usable shelters.
Norway is particularly known for its seasons marked by the presence or absence of the sun. Although Espedalen is not far enough north for us to experience the midnight sun, the nights still remain very bright. We won't see the stars until August!
No, indeed, that's one of the characteristics of total mobility; there may not always be toilets nearby. During bivouac nights, we will use nature as a bathroom.
Most often, our water will come from mountain lakes and rivers, as their waters are perfectly drinkable. Breakfasts and dinners will be provided at the camps. However, you will carry your lunches and snacks with you.
As we've described, this is a 'Norwegian-style' stay. We may be outdoors in case of bad weather (rain, wind, etc.). Nonetheless, we will try to arrange the trip to be as enjoyable as possible. But don't worry, summers are generally not very rainy! If the conditions are deemed too unfavorable, the guides may decide to relocate the stay without impacting the overall organization of your vacation.
No, no deposit is required.
We take care of part of the transportation. Round trips between the site and Lillehammer train station are included thanks to our minibus. We pick you up and drop you off at Lillehammer station. However, transportation within France and flights are at your own expense.
